The founder of this collection is Tomas Sakalauskas (February 10, 1932 in Šiauliai – April 27, 2015 in Vilnius), Lithuanian journalist, editor, essayist, and art critic. In 1951 he graduated from Šiauliai J. Janonis secondary school. In 1951-1956, he studied the Lithuanian language and literature at Vilnius University. In 1954-1956, he worked at the culture club of Vilnius trade unions. In 1956-1957, he wrote for the Tarybinė Moteris (Soviet Woman) Journal. In 1957-1962, editor of the music and literature sections of the Radio and Television Committee of Lithuania. In 1962–1996, editor of the cultural section of the Švyturys magazine. Since 1962, a member of the Lithuanian Union of Journalists; since 1980, of the Lithuanian Artists’ Association; since 1994, of the Lithuanian Writers’ Union. He wrote on cultural and artistic issues. In 1979, he became of meritorious journalist of the Lithuanian SSR; in 1998, he was awarded the Prize of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Lithuania; in 2002, the Order of Gediminas, 5th degree; in 2007, the Government Culture and Art Award.

The founder of the collection is Antanas Slapcinskas (b. 1895). In 1929, he built house in Saudongalė village on the small land plot that he owned, and began farming. In 1920 he became interested in folk medicine, gave medical advice and herbal treatment to farmers. He tried writing poetry, descriptions of nature, remembrances, and articles. His manuscript legacy consists of texts written in the eastern Aukštaitis dialect, which may be of interest to linguist as a monument of living language.
The collection was received from the founder Antanas Slapcinskas in 1976.

The founder of this collection is the Lithuanian astrophysicist Vytautas Pranciškus Straižys (August 20, 1936 in Utena – December 19, 2021 in Vilnius (buried in Utena)). He was an expert member of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences in 1991-1196, corresponding member in 1996-2011, and member emeritus since 2011. Habilitated Doctor of Physical Sciences (Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, 1971). In 1959, he graduated from Vilnius University. Until 1976, he worked at the Institute of Physics and Mathematics of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences – from 1967, as head of the Astrophysics Department. In 1976-1990, he was head of the Astrophysics Department at the Institute of Physics of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences, in 1978-1990 serving as scientific director of the Astronomical Observatory at Vilnius University and becoming professor in 1976 (professor emeritus in 2012). In 1990–2003, he was head of the Astronomical Observatory at the Institute of Theoretical Physics and Astronomy; in 1991-1995, deputy director; and in 2003-2013, senior researcher of this institute. In 1992–1993, he was visiting professor at Union College, New York. He was editor of the Bulletin of the Vilnius Astronomical Observatory in 1977-1990, of the astronomical annual almanac Sky of Lithuania in 1991–2001, of the international scientific journal Baltic Astronomy in 1992–2016. His scientific interests lay mainly in the fields of multicolor photometry of stars, interstellar light extinction, and the structure of the Galaxy. In 1962-1965, he was the leader of the team that developed a multi-color photometric system for studying interstellar light extinction and physical properties of stars such as temperature, luminosity, metallicity, peculiarity (Vilnius photometric system). Vytautas Straižys authored more than 340 scientific works, over 500 popular science articles, and eight monographs. He was awarded the Officer’s Cross of the Order of Gediminas (2003). Asteroid no. 68 730 was named after him.
