The founders of this collection are Stanislovas Peliksas Didžiulis (1850–1927), the founder of a private library in Griežionėliai, bibliographer, Aušra movement activist, advocate of lifting the press ban; writer Liudvika Didžiulienė (1856–1925; pseudonym: Žmona (Wife)); Aldona Didžiulytė-Kazanavičienė (1892–1968), writer, former staff member of the Central Library of the Academy of Sciences of the Lithuanian SSR, educator, and artist.

The collection was received in 1946–1954 from Aldona Didžiulytė-Kazanavičienė in Vilnius, and in 1950 from the library of the then Kaunas State University.
